What is CNC Machining?

CNC Machining is a manufacturing process using pre-programmed computer software that is setup to create an item to a certain specification.

CNC stands for computer numerical control where the computer controls the output of the machine rather than manual controls.

This process is designed to produce super accurate and finely created items for different uses that a manual process can not achieve.

There are three main types of use including:

  • Drilling:

A machining process that uses multi-point drill bits to produce cylindrical holes in the piece. This can include direct and angular drilling.

  • Milling:

This process employs rotating multipoint cutting tools to remove material from the workpiece. This allows for cutting shallow, flat and flat bottomed surfaces.

  • Turning:

This machining process employs the use of single-point cutting tools. This is a lathe or turning machine rotating the piece to be ground to the desired circumference.

In addition, the machine can be used for grinding and routing pieces.

How does CNC Machining Work?

When the machine is activated, the CNC system will cut out the item based on the settings in the system. Numerical controls deliver the crafting instructions for the item and create the piece as desired.

The system can be re-programmed to create different items as required using a range of cutting, drilling, grinding tools. This is achieved via a 3D CAD system that is used to design the item. The process can then be produced with greater accuracy and repeatability.

The work is automated and controlled by the computer system end to end.

Types Of CNC Machining

Different types of CNC Machines will be used for different types of materials:

  • Lathes
  • Mills
  • Router
  • Water Jet Cutter:
  • Plasma
  • 3D Printer
  • Turret punchers

What can be crafted with CNC Machining?

There are a number of items that can be made using CNC Machining. These are typically items that require a high level of precision and accuracy. These include:

  • Macadamia nut farming equipment and parts.
  • Auto parts.
  • Motor racing parts.
  • Aviation parts.
  • Wooden utensils.
  • Plastic utensils.
  • Wooden furniture.
  • Medical ventilators.
  • Tyre rims.
  • Musical instruments.
